Teaching Brain Friendly Reading

With over 30 years of experience working with kids, and training in the science of reading, I can help your child learn to read with ease the Brain Friendly Reading way.
Brain Friendly Reading is a structured literacy program based in science that works for readers of all ages. Most learners will benefit from its systematic, explicit, multi-sensory instruction. This approach is essential for the 65% of people who struggle to learn to read, spell, or write well. In the case of dyslexia or other neurodivergence, a lot of repetition is needed, and BFR knows how to make repetition fun!
Locations
I tutor students in my home in Varna, NY (near Cornell University), at the Tompkins County Public Library in downtown Ithaca, NY, or at Southworth Library in Dryden, NY.
Rates
Self-determined sliding scale
One session per week: $40-$60 per session
Two or more sessions per week: $35-$55 per session
Remote Learning
While in-person learning works best for most people, the Brain Friendly Reading Curriculum lends itself to tutoring by videoconference. I offer 40 minute Zoom sessions.
Payment
Payment is by cash, check, or Venmo. Payment is requested at the time of your session and there is a 10% late fee after one week.
Wondering how many tutoring sessions a week your child needs?
When building and strengthening neural pathways for reading, daily practice is important. Ideally, I will work with your child two or three times a week. I will also teach you some games and activities you can do with your child so they get the daily repetition that will lead to them feeling successful. This will motivate them to continue learning to read!
Wondering how long a tutoring session should be?
My reading sessions range from 40 to 50 minutes. I make myself available for five minutes after that to check in with the adult and give you your “homework”. Session length will depend on the child’s age and mental stamina. Zoom sessions are always a maximum of 40 minutes. Rates are per session, not per hour.
